My favorite Brand X album is Livestock. And actually I prefer the tune Malaga Virgen with Kenwood Dennard on it to Phil's playing.

My favorite Phil Collins drumming is actually on Genensis album Seconds Out. He and Chester are magical on that album.

I've written out some of Phil's stuff and figured alot out for a student who plays in a Genesis tribute band too but I too prefer Kenwood to Phil on Livestock.

I think Burgi's playing on Masques would be a revelation to most of the guys here. His solo on Earth Dance (part of which I transcribed for Drum!'s recent progressive issue), and his grooves throughout helped add cohesiveness to this prog-fusiony jam band. He is a solid, smart studio guy who doesn't overplay, but still does great stuff - not unlike Vinnie.

All the various drummers and line ups in Brand X I thought were incredible. I got into it because of Phil, and discovered so much more...

Unothodox Behaviour, Moroccan Roll, Masques, Livestock, Product, Is There Anything About, & Do They Hurt...

You guys HAVE to check PC groovin' HARD on the Is There Anything About album [title track of same name as album].

& Clark smokes on the tune DMZ off Do They Hurt...

Kenw is great on that album, as I recall [been a LONG time since listening to]...

I need to get all those on CD!

Maybe people forgot to mention Frank Katz, from the latest incarnations of Brand X. He is a master of ghost notes and stickings. Frank wrote a book called "Contemporary Ideas and Phrasing".

Yes, my bad; sorry I forgot to mention him, FK is a really fine player AW, naturally a great addition to the BX alumni.

I've heard some people say he "overplays" there, but you can't deny that that's what they want in a band such as BX.

John Goodsall (Brand X's guitar player) had another band - Fire Merchants - which recorded two albums: eponymous (1989) and 'Landlords of Atlantis' (1996). The first cd is only ok but the second is better than any Brand X albums, IMO, with a furious Toss Panos on drums. He is one of those underrated drummers, one of the best around.

Some people who UNDERplay would like to OVERplay. Less is more? Sometimes the answer is YES, Stewart Copeland with The Police is a great example. At the same time, some people criticize those who overplay to justify their own mediocrity... [img]graemlins/cry.gif[/img] Of course, frequently it's boring to listen to drummers filling all the spaces, music has to breathe. But I think Vinnie and Weckl overplay in a very tasteful way.

Yes, of course you are right, nav...i was being a little taunting & facetious, there.

* Playing "up to one's own level" is not necessarily OP'g per se, but indeed sometimes it can be. That's where maturity & finesse come into play.

When I think of the word overplay, it's usually in an advanced VC/DW-type-of-player way*, moreso than a pure "wanker-fied-wanking" sort of way [img]wink.gif[/img] which I don't call "OP'g;" that's just simply BullShedding. [img]cool.gif[/img]

...altho I don't know if I'd use Stew as THE ref to underplaying [img]wink.gif[/img] ...altho he def could [King of Pain, Every Breath... [img]graemlins/thumbs_up.gif[/img] ]...but he could DEF throw some filler at ya, albeit in a zesty, robust, tasty, AWA somewhat manically musical way! [img]wink.gif[/img]
